NEW HERE? Β· MOVING TO UTAH
π¦ Moving to Utah
The official to-dos, who to call for power and water in your city, and the local stuff nobody tells you. Every item links the official source.
New-to-Utah checklist
The government stuff, roughly in order.
1Swap your driver license
Fill out the online application first, then bring your old license, ID, Social Security proof and two proofs of your Utah address. Expect an eye test and a written test.
2Title and register your car
New residents get 60 days to move titles and registration to Utah. Your out-of-state title or registration is enough to get started.
3Check if you need an emissions test
Required in Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber and Cache counties for many vehicles. If you need more time, the DMV sells a 30-day temporary permit.
4Register to vote
Register online. You need to have lived in Utah at least 30 days before an election to vote in it.
5Forward your mail
Set up forwarding with the Postal Service so nothing gets lost.
Your school district & trash day
A city or ZIP is enough to start. Add your street for exact school and trash answers.
π A city or ZIP is enough. Want exact school and trash answers? Add your street. We send it to the U.S. Census Bureauβs free address tool (and OpenStreetMap if needed) and donβt save it.
Utilities by city
Who to call for power, gas, water and trash. Providers can change street by street, so confirm your address with them.
Natural gas: Enbridge Gas is the gas company the city pages point to. Some still use its old name, Dominion Energy.

Utah culture 101
Things locals know that surprise new people.
Beer in grocery stores, the rest at state stores
Grocery and convenience stores sell beer up to 5% alcohol. Wine, liquor and stronger beer are sold at state liquor stores and package agencies.
State liquor stores close Sundays
Theyβre also closed on state holidays. Plan ahead for weekends.
July 24 is Pioneer Day
Itβs an official state holiday, on the same list as the Fourth of July.
βWardβ means a local congregation
Youβll hear it a lot. Latter-day Saint wards go by where you live, which is why the Churchβs finder asks for an address.
Winter inversions
Cold air traps pollution in the valleys a few times each winter. Our home page shows todayβs air and no-burn status.
Canyon traction law
In storms, UDOT can require snow tires or chains. Big and Little Cottonwood have stricter rules when the flashing signs are on.
Check avalanche danger first
Going into the backcountry in winter? Read the daily forecast before you go.
Moving day logistics
Do these the week you move.
Start power and gas before move-in day
Most homes are on Rocky Mountain Power for electricity unless the city runs its own (see your city below). Gas is Enbridge Gas; some city pages still call it Dominion Energy.
Set up water, sewer and trash
These usually go through your city or a local district. Some cities only let the property owner open the water account.
Waiting on an emissions test?
A 30-day temporary permit lets you drive legally while you finish inspections.
Check roads on moving day
Live road conditions, closures and cameras, especially for winter canyon and mountain-pass moves.
Need help finding something?
Call 211 or search online for food, housing and other local help.
